In our recent article, The 5 Ways the Windows 10 Upgrade Will Make Your Life Easier, we discussed some of the new features that are supposed to make Windows 10 better than any previous versions of Windows. While additions such as Cortana, Universal apps, the Xbox app, Microsoft Edge (the new Internet browser) and Continuum have created an exciting new operating system, there are, as always, some challenges associated with the upgrade. If you are still deciding whether or not to make the change, here are some important things to consider before upgrading to Windows 10.

The Cost:

Currently the Windows 10 upgrade is absolutely free. Microsoft will continue to offer the new operating system for free for one year. Starting July 29, 2016, the cost of upgrading will shoot up to around $120 for the home version. So if you are considering making the change, it is recommended that you do it before then.

The Home Screen:

If you have not upgraded your computer to a touch screen, and have been frustrated by the menu options of Windows 8, then Windows 10 - and the return of the Start Menu - may be the right choice for you. This greatly increases the ease with which desktops without touch screens can navigate through the system. If you do have a touch screen, Windows 10 is pushing what your screen can do with the addition of the new Internet browser, Microsoft Edge.

Your Hardware:

If you are currently running Windows 7 or Windows 8, then you will have no problem passing the minimum hardware requirements to run Windows 10. However, if you currently use Windows XP or Windows Vista, it is likely that you will need to buy a new computer (or upgrade your system) before being able to make the change.

The Bugs:

Most new software has bugs that it needs to work out. Windows 10 is no different. Some early adopters of the operating system have experienced problems such as:

  • Black screens of death
  • Messages stating that the operating system is missing
  • Devices being taken out of action or being deleted
  • Problems accessing OneDrive
  • Start menus refusing to open
  • WiFi refusing to connect

Of course, Microsoft is working to correct these bugs, and the first major update (which will hopefully solve most or all of these problems) is scheduled to be released in October.

Many tech agencies are professing the belief that Windows 10 will be Microsoft’s best operating system ever. While there may be some bugs in the initial release, there are many exciting developments that we believe will make Windows 10 a winner.
