Welcome to Lesson #3 of the Bask Member Onboarding Program. We’re excited that you’ve joined us and look forward to helping you keep your computer in tip-top shape.

For today’s lesson, we want to talk about tune-ups. We like to think of this as getting an oil change for your computer. Just like you bring in your car every three months to the shop for some quick preventative maintenance, Bask provides a quarterly tune-up of your computer as part of your monthly subscription. And, just like regular oil changes help your car last longer, tune-ups do the same for your computer.

But, we wanted to let you know what it is that we do when we’re tuning up your computer, so here are the top 4 things we do during every computer tune-up.

  1. Defrag the Hard Drive – Now, you may be asking what is “defrag” and what does it even mean? Well, think of it this way. Just like on a car, a transmission can get worn down by shifting gears on a daily basis. When you save a document (or change it’s location) you’re essentially causing the transmission to shift on your computer. And, when you make a lot of changes, the hard drive in your computer can develop errors and problems that make it difficult to use. When we defrag a hard drive, we’re essentially realigning the gears, giving them a good scrub and polish and filling in any holes. In this way, your computer remains speedy, secure and reliable.
  2. Critical Operating System Updates – Every operating system, whether it’s windows or mac, usually goes through a series of updates every so often. Some are critical and others are less so. During the tune-up, we ensure that you’re up-to-date with the latest security fixes as well as performance enhancements so that you can take advantage of all the latest technology without worrying if your computer can handle it.
  3. Check for Viruses and Malware – The anti-virus software handles this, but we want to be sure that it’s working properly. And, on the off chance that something did slip through, we want to catch it and get it off your computer before it can do any damage.
  4. Remove Junkware – “Junkware” is the term given to software that installs itself on your computer for no other reason that to annoy you and slow down your performance. Things like browser toolbars, adware (which delivers unwanted advertisements) and other intrusive software that does nothing but hinder your computer’s performance. After all, the more programs that run, the slower your computer is.

That’s it for lesson #3. We hope you’re enjoying these lessons and if you’ve missed any, feel free to go back and see lesson #1 and lesson #2. Our next lesson will focus on the Bask HelpDesk, but in the meantime, if you have questions, or just want to get your next tune-up scheduled, give us a call or drop us an email. We look forward to hearing from you!
