Technology is ever changing. For users who want to take advantage of the latest features and security their hardware and software has to offer, upgrades and updates are an important part of your digital life. As these two terms are often misused - or believed to be one and the same - today we want to take a look at what is the difference between an update and an upgrade.

Updates

An update refers to a change or modification in an existing software. Updates are intended to provide enhancements, such as fixing bugs, errors, and security issues or by improving certain functions. An example of an update includes the recently released iOS 8.4.1 (from iOS 8.4) for iPhone.

Most updates are free and are downloaded directly from the Internet. Software updates can be automatic (meaning the user does not need to do anything) while others require the user’s permission before making changes.

Software that makes regular updates include your operating systems (such as Windows, OS X, and Linux) and your Internet Browsers (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Safari). It is also common that any new software you install will require that you update other programs (such as Adobe Flash Player or Silverlight) in order to use all of its features. Updates can be released anywhere from a weekly to a monthly to an annual basis.

It is important that you accept all available software updates. These updates do not affect any of the data you have stored in the software and they can help prevent problems from occurring within your program.

Upgrades

An upgrade is when you replace an older software with a completely new version. One example is the recent upgrade from older Windows’ operating systems (such as Windows 7 or Windows 8) to Windows 10. While an update is focused on addressing bugs or security issues, an upgrade is designed to provide brand new functions and features.

Upgrades are usually large in size and can take a considerable amount of time to accomplish. While some upgrades can be done over the Internet, many require a piece of media, such as a CD or DVD. Some require you to purchase the new program while others are free.

It is recommended that you upgrade your hardware and software at least every three years. This allows you to take advantage of new technology that runs faster, offers better features, and has a higher level of security. It also allows you to use newer software. For example, hardware that is 5 years old often does not have the minimum system requirements to run recently released programs.
