Today, the speed at which information is exchanged is faster than ever. With high speed Internet available in the palms of our hands, we have access to endless information whenever we want it. This has changed the way we view and digest information, including the news. No more waiting for the next day's paper or the evening news to get the latest headlines. Today you simply pick up your smartphone and, within seconds, you can read hundreds -- if not thousands -- of headlines from around the world. So much information can be overwhelming. With countless online news sites posting thousands of stories daily, it can be difficult to keep track of accuracy and to find specific topics you're interested in. Here are three free news apps that not only will help you stay on top of the latest headlines, but also tailor your experience to specific topics and interests.

Feedly

Feedly

Available on iOS, Android, and the Web

Feedly is a great app that can deliver the news topics you're looking for. One of the best things about this app is how simple and easy to use it is. You can search news stories from anywhere, about any subject. Customize your account's news feed to include stories from specific sites or by a favorite category -- or both! The app links to Facebook and Twitter, so you can see the most popular stories from your social media feeds, as well as easily share favorite posts. You can customize your RSS news feeds to keep new, long articles, videos, and blog posts all in one place.

Flipboard

Flipboard

Available on iOS, Android, Windows and the Web

Flipboard is an app that displays news in the style of a magazine. The app specializes in finding in-depth articles on specific topics rather than breaking headline news. You add topics you're interested in, and when new articles appear touching on those topics, they emerge in your feed. You can receive articles from newspapers, blogs, magazines, and social network sites. Flipboard's magazine format looks really great on your smartphone or tablet, making articles easy to read and navigate.

Google News

Google News

Available on iOS, Android and the Web

Google News is a great app for staying on top of headline news from around the world. The app accesses main media outlets in more than 70 countries and in multiple languages. You can create Google alerts around specific words or topics. Unlike other news sites, Google News can track local news, weather, and sports. This is one of my favorite essential apps. When it comes to staying on top of trending news and headlines from around the world, Google News can't be beat.

The beauty of all these apps is that they collect news stories from multiple sources and not just one news network. This gives you a wide variety of opinions on the same topic. Remember, just about every local and major news outlet has its own app. If you're partial to a specific brand or style of news, all the major networks have online versions you can easily access: CNN, BBC, NPR, AP, Fox News, and ABC, just to name a few.
